{"exhibit":{"title":"African Americans and Advertising","description":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">African Americans have been represented in advertising since its inception in the mid-19th century. Most of the visual images (until World War II) featured African Americans as stereotypes and caricatures, created by white advertising agencies for white consumers as a way to reassure whites in the midst of intense political and social change. In the late 20th century, although some of these representations relied on earlier stereotypes, we do see a much wider representation of African Americans and an increase in crossracial ads.<\/span><\/p>","credits":"Marya McQuirter, Digital Curator","featured":0,"public":1,"theme":"","theme_options":null,"slug":"african-americans-and-advertis","added":"2018-02-26 18:08:57","modified":"2018-04-02 17:22:07","owner_id":2,"use_summary_page":1,"cover_image_file_id":null,"id":7},"item":{"item_type_id":18,"collection_id":5,"featured":0,"public":1,"added":"2018-01-29 19:51:32","modified":"2018-03-14 17:56:57","owner_id":1,"id":1309}}
